 Angler Outfitters Featured Product

Bass Assassin Sea Shad

When this bait first came out it was the only one of it's kind. Not that there wasn't similar baits out there, but when Bass Assassin created the small soft paddle tail bait it seemed as though they were a step above the rest. We at Angler Outfitters noticed a quick trend by other tackle manufactures to create a similar bait, such as the D.O.A. Cal Shad Tails which led us to believe Bass Assassin was on to something.

Our team of anglers testing this bait included fishing guides from Port Arthur to Port Isabel as well as all fishers in between. Beginners, intermediate and experienced anglers all tested this bait for Angler Outfitters.

A typical story from our team of testers goes like this: While fishing with a guide on Sabine Lake I pulled out the Sea Shad bag and replaced the plastic the guide gave me with the new bait. No one had caught a fish for 2 hours of fishing until I put the bait on my 1/4 oz. jig head. The first thing I caught was a slot-sized redfish that took the Morning Glory Assassin. Then as we moved around the lake to where the flounder were laying, I pulled in 3 Flounder to the guide's 1. While we were still on the flounder hole, I played tug-of-war with an over-size red, until she finally gave in about 15 minutes later. At the end of the day I ended up with 3 keeper redfish, 6 flounder, 2 trout, and even a small drum to boot. All caught on the Sea Shad using colors in Morning Glory, Purple Canary, and Texas Red using a screw lock 1/4 oz jig head.

Another story from the Port O'Connor area was similar but involved a first time angler. They were fishing for red fish in one of the back lakes and catching red fish here and there; a typical back lake day when the red fish are biting. The first time angler did not know much about working lures or plastics as in this case. None-the-less we put one of the Sea Shads on her line, gave her a few tips on how to work it and that was all she needed. However, instead of working the bait just off the bottom, she let it bounce off the bottom slowly. Basically she was doing a slow retrieve and didn't know the difference. Well the fish apparently did and she had her limit of reds in less than 45 minutes and quickly learned what catch and release meant.

Here is the data cumulated from our team of 5 testers for this product.

Color Selection
The colors for the Sea Shad are the normal colors coming from Bass Assassin that you see in their other plastic baits. Some of the testers favorite colors include; Purple Canary, Morning Glory, Red Shad, Texas Red, Space Guppy, Bloody White, and Shrimp.
Bait Action
This is where the Sea Shad excells in catching fish. It's great tail action is due to the very soft plastic, unlike other plastics that are built using a harder compound the Sea Shad plastic generates non-stop action as it moves through the water triggering heart-stopping hook sets. Whether you bounce it off the bottom slowly, keep it in the middle of the water column, or use a steady retrieve the movement of the soft paddle tail drives the fish crazy.

Durability and Pricing
The only downfall to this great bait is its durability to last more than a few good hits from a trout or redfish. While on the fish we had to change out the bait ever so often and went through 2-3 packs of baits in no time. Whether the fish ate the paddle off or ripped it enough so it wouldn't stay on the jig head anymore, time was spent putting another one on the jig head. The good news is that at an average price of $3.29 for each 10 pack of Sea Shads, the results were well worth the $10 - $15 to catch limits of reds, with trout and flounder on the stringer as well.
